The Assam Resilient Rural Bridges Program (ARRBP), backed by the World Bank, aims to enhance green, inclusive, and resilient connectivity in rural Assam. The program focuses on constructing, rehabilitating, and maintaining rural bridges to improve disaster resilience and strengthen the institutional capabilities of the Assam Public Works Roads Department (APWRD).

 

The state of Assam has initiated an independent infrastructure initiative titled the Assam Resilient Rural Bridges Program (ARRBP). This program aims to systematically address the maintenance and repair of existing rural bridges, widen narrow bridges to double-lane standards, and replace old, distressed, or temporary structures. It also includes the replacement of bridges that have collapsed due to floods and landslides, as well as the construction of new bridges to fill critical connectivity gaps. The program will be implemented in a phased manner across approximately 44,600 km of rural roads, with around 1,184 bridges identified for intervention under the defined scope of work.

 

As part of the program, about 1184 Bridges have been identified and included to rehabilitate maintain and replacementnew construction for efficient transport connectivity and to ensure safety of road transport in the state of Assam.

 

ARRBP will focus on (i)Research based climate resilient bridges design, construction& maintenance (ii)Bioengineering solutions and mainstream (iii) Emergency Warning System (EWS) developed and applied (iv) Bridges Management System (BMS) improved (v) Sub national roads and bridges administration reform (vi) PWRD Business system developed.

 

Construction/Rehabilitation of 1184 Bridges in rural road networks of an estimated total length of 46214 RM for ensuring safe transportation, through evidence-based climate resilient structures and bioengineering shall be implemented through the field Divisions (PIU) of PWRD, Government of Assam, across the state. To assist the Employer i.e., Chief Engineer (EAP), PWRD (PMU), and the Client (Govt. of Assam) in implementing the Program, it will engage Program Management Consultant (PMC), and other consulting firms as needed, using the proceeds of the WB financing.
